Thank you! Does that hospital have a good NICU? This is a non-emergency question, fortunately. Planning ahead for giving birth, and researching the best options for NICUs if needed. (And of course hoping this will be N/A.)

I would say abc santa fe and espanol are the best known but most important is where your doc has privileges

Awesome! Do you refer to the NICU specifically, or the hospital as a whole?

The hospital as a whole

My son went to NICU at hospital español and it was good! 👍🏼 doctors were good. My advice is that do not agree to all medical tests that they say urgency, but besides that it was good!

Not being dramatic but what hospital was it that was going around in the foreigner groups recently where the couple (US citizens I think) had their baby and the hospital refused to give them their baby until their bill was paid in full? Maybe 4-6 months ago?

There you go. Maybe avoid that one.

That situation was particularly dramatic, but I do think a lot of (most) places make you pay your bill in full before you or baby can leave

The reason is that many US cotizens had been in hospitals and they leave without paying, just because they are foreigners. It had happen in the ABC hospitals

It’s not simply them withholding the baby. It’s that they lied and said their hospital had an ICU unit. Lied to the patient AND the doctor. And then charged them the cost of ambulance over to their sister hospital that did have the ICU facilities, and resulting ICU fees, and were insanely not assuming any responsibility. It’s a serious lawsuit. It’s not dramatic, it’s wrongly promoting care facilities in a hospital, facilities that are crucial in life & death situations. Yes beware of that hospital if you’re planning to give birth there and make sure your OBGYN is aware of the case.

I dont know all the details of this particular case so im not speaking about that, just saying that in general in Mexico it is standard practice that you are required to pay before they will release you or your child.

Ok. Im not a mexican legal expert. I am not talking about anyone else’s experience nor am I talking about detaining or kidnapping or similar situation. I am just saying that it is common that you are required to pay before a patient is released.

These conversations are not at all helpful and detract from what is otherwise a very supportive and productive group focused on helping people access healthcare in Mexico City.
