Paying for health insurance in Mexico or out of pocket?

what is the main reason for this?

Speaking for my family: we still have health insurance in the US, so if any of us had a brain tumor or something we’d plan to return to the us to get treatment covered by our insurance there. Here all our medical costs are routine (pediatrician check ups, vaccines) and are relatively inexpensive. If we ever stop maintaining coverage in the US we’d probably look into adding major medical insurance here.
